“Upper-crossed syndrome” is the medical term associated with having a stiff body, particularly a stiff spinal column or spine - the universal problem associated with hours of sitting in front of the computer, driving, talking on cell phones, and so on. This causes the head and shoulders to be held forward of the rest of the body. The middle and upper parts of the back become stiff and rigid, unable to properly hold the body up under gravity.  The ability for easy and flexible movement is lost. Your body feels stiff and uncomfortable… like trying to drive your car with the parking brake on.

Habitually poor posture, the major cause of having a stiff spine, forward tilt of the head, and rotation of the shoulders is due to:

  • Long hours sitting at the computer, reading or studying, with the head held forward.

  • Talking on the phone, driving the car, other chronic habitual/repetitive movements.

  • Storing physical and emotional stress in the upper back, especially between the shoulders. Psychological burdens i.e. ”He’s got the weight of the world on his shoulders.”

  • The difficulty in freely moving the middle part of the spinal column due to the loss of pure side-to-side (not rotational) movement.

Three Principles Of Vitalogy Massage Therapy

Your Vitalogy Massage Therapy session starts with a brief health history and examination of your posture. You lie fully clothed in your favorite sweats or similar type clothing on a massage table or soft foam mats. Shoes and jewelry are removed and all pockets are emptied. Cologne or perfume should not be worn and makeup kept to a minimum. Loosing up your body through light stretching and/or aerobics is encouraged prior to the session. 

How it works.

The practitioner starts by using a simple rocking action to slowly and carefully put your body through a range of motion. This identifies where it is moving well and where it is not. Several minutes are spent loosening up and getting your body comfortable again. Communication with the practitioner assures your comfort and understanding. In Vitalogy Massage Therapy, your body, not the treatment being done to it, directs how and where it wants to be moved.

What Vitalogy Massage Therapy feels like.

The gentle and soothing rocking sensation makes your body feel refreshed. You will notice as you progress that certain areas loosen up faster than others. This is due to accommodation and compensation for past stress, injury, and traumas. While many people have neck and lower back problems, the origins, though, can be traced to the middle part of the back (especially between the shoulder blades) freezing up and not moving properly. Thus, the neck and lower back work "overtime" trying to compensate and become troublesome themselves. 
Often the last part of your body to become adversely affected is often the first area that shows improvement.

When you are "stressed out," you feel tension everywhere. With improvement in some part of your body, you now have a reference point to differentiate between that improvement and other areas of your body which still require treatment.     

Clients will say, “I can’t believe how tight my neck is,” when their neck is in the same physical condition as the previous week. Why do they feel this sensation? It’s because their shoulders have become looser.  Compared to them their neck now feels tight. It takes loose shoulders by which to reference the tight neck. That’s how it works.

In Vitalogy Massage Therapy you allow the practitioner to freely move your body while you lie relaxed. The idea is for your mind to become an observer of your body's movements rather than directing them.  This helps the practitioner identify the "glitches" in movement - where a specific alignment or range of motion is uncomfortable for the body and is demonstrated by a jerking action.  In Vitalogy we say, "Where the glitches are, the issues are” (both physical and non-physical).

Release: Removing the physical stress out of your body. Often, this is the result of sensory overload or “too much input.”
Lengthen: Stretching and elongating your body with sufficient motion and velocity (speed) to counteract accumulated contraction from physical and mental stress, as well as the forces of gravity.
Realign: Returning the bones and joints of your skeletal structure back to their correct relative positions.

What to do in between sessions.

Light exercise will help integrate newfound movements into the body for use on a daily basis.  Lots of water and vegetables are recommended to flush toxins out of the system that the treatments have released.  Being out in fresh air is helpful.  Alleviate stiffness by getting up and moving around from time to time, especially if you have a sedentary lifestyle sitting for long periods of time at work, home, or while driving a car.

You will learn how to improve your posture through evaluation with your practitioner.
